Getting Started: Translating alpha.org

Unlike myAlpha & Marriage Builder, alpha.org is  not primarily translated in POEditor. Nearly everything is handled within the alpha.org site itself.

If you want more than one language you can use any Network translations another NAO has made. This is the same as myAlpha and Marriage Builder.

Translating alpha.org is where you will spend most of your time

Please note: if you share a language with another country, such as English, Spanish or German, please INSTEAD create 'Customisations' explained later. Otherwise you will be editing another NAO's site too (which they might not like).

Translating the alpha.org template into your language

To translate you will need to go to Translator View then Pages and find the page you wish to translate. For instance the 'Prisons' page. Find your language, for most there will only be one language.
Click 'Create'.
Please note: The list of languages is populated by what you have enabled in Settings -> Languages ( explained here)

The following page is an exact copy of the Global English Prisons page, at that moment. Any future changes made to the Global English Prisons page will not affect your translated page.

Please note: you can see which language you are editing in the menu at the top of the page, for us this says "Language: Italian"
If you cannot see this top menu press the three stacked dots in the top right and disable 'Fullscreen mode'. This is activated for some users by default.

You can then edit the text, images and other content however you like to make your own translation.

Do you share a language with another country? Such as English, German or Spanish?

Instead of following the steps in Translator View you need to go to the Admin View -> Pages -> [find the page you want] -> Customise.
This lets you customise that language on your site, instead of changing that language of every NAO' site.

You will then be taken to an English Customisation of that page.

To change to your language select the language from the Top Menu and click 'Create Customisation'.

You will now create a Local customisation that only exists on your Site. No other NAO will be able to see or edit it.

POEditor translations

Though POEditor is not the primary translation system used in alpha.org it is still marginally used, for some error and buttons. There is roughly 60 terms compared to 600 in myAlpha.

You should already have access to this. If not please contact your Regional Digital Coordinator.
